Victorian/1880s Webb/Mt. Washington Art Glass PeachBlow Biscuit Jar Marked B25
Up for Sale is a RARE AND EXQUISITE 1880s Victorian Art Glass PeachBlow Biscuit/Cracker Jar Marked B25. It also has another black mark that I cannot discern through my jeweler's loupe and I believe it is marked with the faded numbers 671/1000.
Featuring hand painted figural bluebirds perched on either apple blossoms or dogwood branches in raised relief with enameling and gilding. The decorated Aesthetic Movement inspired decorations are absolutely stunning. The back of the jar has a different decorated pattern the front. It features a white flower sprig that is enameled and gilded like the front pattern.
The cracker/biscuit jar stands 11 tall from the base to the tallest point of the twisted rope patterned handle. The is jar is 9 tall up to the tip of the ornate flower finial. The lid is framed by flower petals in the center of the lid. Lid is in great shape. The fitter shows very minor silver plate wear.
The jar is 6 tall from the base to the fitter. The most bulbous part of the body measures approximately 5-1/4 diameter.
The color of the top portion of the body is a rosy pink that shades lighter pink in the middle and white at the bottom of the jar. There are no chips or cracks on the jar. This is decadent satin glass inside and out. I have cleaned the jar with Bon Ami Paste.
There are very few minute black marks on the exterior of the jar that normally occur with age and wear from the handle or use. I included photos of any flaws noted and took photos in natural light and with flashed lighting. The jar is undamaged and in exquisite condition considering its age. The exterior coloring is what collectors today refer to as peachblow. The tint begins at the base as a soft pink and deepens as it reaches the rim into a magnificent cranberry peach or wild rose color.
The inside is cased in opal white which is typical of British makers peach blow glass and do note that this top-shelf glass allows you to see the outside design from the inside of the jar. The touch of this glass is so soft, and the body will ring beautifully when tapped with your fingertips. Please also note the mold style and size signature on the bottom of the jar. In large black script on the bottom base of the jar. E pontil is polished and the marking was placed on the base where it features the pink glass and white swirled in the center. This adds tremendous value to your acquisition. Washington biscuit jars have this exact biscuit mold number and ink color. I'm also aware that Webb used a duplicate system. The jar features hand painted birds perched on enameled and gilded dogwood branches and is of very high quality. The quality and style are similar to the works of Jules Barbe, Harrach, Baccarat and Moser.
This is a scarce and collectible biscuit jar. Please note that the jars I have seen have all had different lids and handles so I cannot say with certainty that this is the original lid. Also, the twisted handle could be adjusted to be more centered on the fitting. The handle does stand on its own in an upright position and looks like it is marked on the inside of the lid, but is not discernable to me with a jewelers loupe. And were attributed to either Webb or Mt.
Washington Art Glass Art Glass Houses. With the superb raised enamel blossoms and delightful birds, the decoration is so charming that this antique biscuit can't help but be the prized possession of your Webb/Mt.
