This is a truly fabulous and very rare, early 20th century, circa 1905, Art Nouveau, Johann Loetz, papillion, silver overlay, gold/green/blue iridescent miniature vase, of footed circular form with tapered body, decorated with stunning silver overlaid shamrocks and whiplash lines, to a gold/blue iridescent papillion ground/base. It has a silver rimmed top edge and silver rimmed bottom edge. The colour and lustre of this miniature Loetz Vase is truly superb. It's been a nightmare to photo though, because it's picking up so much light reflection.
It's iridescent colour, changes depending on room lighting conditions. Please also note, all the white lines are just light reflection's and photo 11 was taken next to a container of cocktail sticks, to give you some idea of perspective with regards size. The quality of workmanship in this exquisite miniature vase is really something to behold!!!! The glass factory was founded in 1836 in Klostermuhle and bought up in 1840 by the smelter Johann Loetz, whose widow ran the works under the name Johann Loetz Widow.
The grandson, Max Ritter von Spaun, took over the glass factory in 1879 and completely modernized it. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries and enjoyed an international reputation. The firm gained world fame through its Art Nouveau glasses that following the precedent of Louis C. It developed to become an independent and multi-facetted production line. Around the turn of the century when Max von Spaun was achieving great success with glasses with Phenomenon décor, the glass works exploited contacts with the Viennese art scene together with the glass retailers E.
The resulting cooperation with artists like Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and his students reached its zenith in the years after 1900. In these years the metallic iridescent glasses were particularly characteristic. Loetz finally closed down during the Second World War. Height: 3.5 inches or 9 cm.
