Victorian Jumbo Sized Webb Vaseline Opalescent Thorn Handled Glass Basket! We will be listing many treasures that are extremely rare over the upcoming weeks from our own collection. This is a spectacularly large and brilliantly patterned thorn handled glass basket!
In our 20 + years of collecting we have never seen another art glass basket anywhere near this size. This has been one of our most cherished finds from our numerous shopping trips to England over the past 2 decades. It was produced by Thomas Webb in England around 1880-90. The pattern on the sides of the basket is swirled and shaped much like fish scales. The top opening is highlighted with creamy opalescence and gently unfolds to a leaf shaped design.
It has applied feet that are also leaf shaped. The handle is unusually double twisted and covered with thorns which was a frequent pattern used by Webb.
The glass has a high lead content and rings brilliantly like a church bell when struck! The base has a highly polished pontil mark. Add some brilliant colors to your collection with this magnificent piece! This is for the best of collections! Size is 11 1/2" wide and 9 1/2" tall. There are no chips or cracks.
