Stunning! Vaseline Opalescent Brides Bowl or Basket Insert, American Ca. 1890
Description and Condition: This is a truly superb example of later Victorian American art glass. Obviously hand blown and tooled, this 9.5 inch ruffled square bowl was probably intended to fit into a silver-plated holder to make a bride basket. The very rich opalescent vaseline band in this piece is just stunning. I have added a photo taken with blacklight to show the rich vaseline band. Then there's the white edge band and the pink interior.
This bowl is about 3.5 inches deep. It has a ground pontil, as shown in the photos. The bottom disk of the bowl that would fit into a holder is 3 3/8ths inches diameter and 3/8ths inch thick. This bowl was probably made by Mt.
Washington or New England but it could also have been made by one of the West Virginia or Ohio glass makers in the 1890s. My picky eyes could not find an issue with this piece. Absolutely no e-checks will be accepted!! I will gladly do my best to provide you with any needed information, including more photos. Happy, satisfied customers are my goal. Final Comment: I have seen many of these pieces in more than 30 years as a dealer and qualified appraiser, and I would rate this one at the top in its class of brides bowl. Silver plated holders for this bowl should not be hard to find. Please check out my other items of antique glass, pottery, and porcelain that I will be listing in the next couple of months.
