The glass form itself appears to be of a design that was produced by Smith Brothers Glass of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The hand-painted decorations appear to be by a Mt.

Washington artist which would make sense as the Smith Brothers had originally worked for Mt. Washington Glass was in production from 1837 until 1894 when it was merged and continued operations as Pairpoint glass until 1970, Smith Brothers Glass was only in operation from 1874 until 1899 making it much more difficult to find these rare pieces of quality glass.

This piece is from 1880's when the ribbed opaline victorian glass line was first produced and was so popular. The body of this vase is an oval cylinder with a flared top and ten vertical ribs. The base to this piece is a gilt ormolu base that consists of a lacework of ivy leaf and vine around the circumference and three swirling feet that are topped with a scallop like design. The hand-painted design is a cluster of two open pansy blossoms (with white Coralene highlights) with additional unopened buds and the accompanying foliage which also has the Coralene highlights. There are intentional small speckles of gold on the ivory background and matching gold highlights around the flowers and along the edge of the ruffled and folded rim. The base of the glass has a hand painted yellow ring around it's foot. With a height of 11 inches (including the base), a width of 6 1/2 inches, a depth of 5 1/4 inches, and a weight of 1 pound 12 ounces (unboxed), this delightful glass creation is a masterpiece of the glass smiths' art and a wonderful piece of 19th Century Decor. The only wear to the entire piece is the loss of some of the gilt finish on the ormolu base, however it does not alter the overall appearance of the piece and would have to be expected on any gilt piece of roughly 120 years in age.
