MT WASHINGTON DECORATED MELON RIBBED SUGAR SHAKER. This gorgeous Victorian art glass sugar shaker was made by the Mount Washington Glass Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts, circa 1880s-1890s. The company originated in Boston in 1837 as the New Bedford Glass Works. Libbey in 1870 and moved to New Bedford, when the company was renamed the Mount Washington Glass Works.
In 1876 it was reorganized and renamed the Mount Washington Glass Company, which was its name until 1894, when it merged with the Pairpoint Mfg. Company, a renown maker of silver. This sugar shaker (also called a "mufineer") is Opal (white milk glass) with a lightly applied background, shading from light salmon at the top of the lobes to a cream color all the way to the base. This piece features Mt Washington's lovely Yellow Daisy Design, which is hand-painted all around the piece. The intricately detailed metal lid has a lovely raised pattern of flowers seemingly arranged in two separate footed bowls, with two butterflies. The 31 holes in the lid form a six-pointed star with a circle in the center. Measures 4 inches wide at the widest point, and approximately 2-3/4 inches high with the lid on. It is definitely a sugar shaker, and not the much more common salt shaker. CONDITION: No chips, cracks, scratches, sickness or repairs. The lid is original and without dents, corrosion or other damage, and has a nice patina.

It screws on well to the applied metal collar, which firmly adheres to the neck of the piece with what I believe is the original plaster of paris bonding. It is in excellent condition for a piece that is about 125 years old.

REFERENCE: Identically shaped item is shown on upper left of page 236 of Mt. Washington Art Glass by Betty Sisk. The Yellow Daisy Design on this piece is similar to a toothpick holder shown in the upper right corner of page 241 of the same reference book, and again on page 247, bottom right.
