Moser Matched Pair of Smokey Topaz Japonesque Decorated Art Nouveau Vases
Moser Pair of Smokey Topaz Japonesque Decorated Art Nouveau Vases. What a great pair of matched vases! These wonderful Moser vases bring Japonesque art to glass, with one side featuring ginkgo leaf art, and the other side appears to be bamboo leaves. The leaf art is framing Japanese motifs reminiscent of those found on 18th and early 19th century silk Komonos. The tops of the vases are hand decorated in the style of. Pâte-sur-pâte, which is a French term meaning "paste on paste" typically used on porcelain, but a similar technique can also be employed on glass with a similar effect. It is a method of decoration in which a relief design is created by applying successive layers of white enamel with a brush.
The glass itself is Smokey Topaz in color, and very sensitive to light, causing it to shade from a light color to a dark color dependent upon the light source. The vases are optically ribbed, and the tops have been hand cut and tooled, and embellished in gold gilt.
The bases feature finely polished pontils. Any white "blotches" or spots you see on the glass are just reflections from the photography lights. References: See the Baldwin "Moser Artistic Glass" book for many similar examples. Thanks for looking, please ask questions, good luck!
