Clarke Fairy Lamp Glass Base, Satin Diamond Quilted Shade, c. 1880's
Welcome to Antiques & Moore! The shade is a beautiful turquoise blue glass cased over white with a diamond quilted mother-of-pearl internal design and a satin glass exterior finish. Base measures 1 1/2" high and 3" in diameter. Shade measures 2 1/2" high with the top opening being just under 1" in diameter and a 2 3/8 diameter base. Measures 3 1/2 high with shade in place.
This nice fairy lamp has a lovely appearance although it does have a few issues. The base has slight roughness around the scalloped top edge that can be felt but is hard to notice.
This is very common on pattern glass pieces from this period. The art glass shade has some areas around the base where it appears that smoke has penetrated between the layers of glass and caused some discoloration and there is a flaw in the white interior lining that has also become discolored (see photos). The flaws on the shade are hardly noticed when it is in place. There are no chips on the cut top and bottom edge of shade.
