Antique Victorian SILVERED MERCURY GLASS BOWL Pedestal Base HAND BLOWN. 9.25"wide x 4" high. Bowl depth is about 3.25.
Round footed base is 4 1/8 diameter. Genuine circa late 1800s- approx. 1875- this piece was made at the height of the Victorian era and represents the best of the best. Quality of this piece is EXCEPTIONAL, which leads me to believe that it is likely British, not American, in origin.
Completely hand blown, hand silvered with mercury swirls which softly glow with tones of silver, and in the correct lighting, has a subtle gold sheen as well. Because of the hand applied mercury swirls, this piece has unique patterning throughout its surface and looks different from all angles. This is an extremely delicate piece- feather light. Features a marvelous wide rim which is gently curved. This piece looks magnificent from any angle and must have been created by an extremely skilled artisan. Would be gorgeous displayed on a tabletop, or used as a very elegant Holiday display bowl perhaps with antique ornaments/balls inside. Very good condition- would list as Excellent but for 2 SMALL chips at rim -age appropriate and very minor.
Top edge of rim is flat [straight across], and these are where the 2 small chips are- they do NOT extend down over the side of rim whatsoever. See last 2 pics & use zoom. NO other damage, no scratches, cracks, fading.
Does have minor/light wear to internal mercury coating just from being displayed for almost 150 years. Mercury is extremely stable and not flaking or wearing off. As this bowl was hand blown and hand created, it has a charming slightly less than perfectly shaped rim and where the bowl is fused to the base is just slightly tilted.
