Antique Victorian Mary Gregory Optic Swirl Glass Vase Lady Long Auburn Hair

VICTORIAN REDHEAD IN THE GARDEN VASE. This listing features a Victorian bud or stick vase adorned with an Auburn long haired beauty, dressed all in white.

She has let down her hair and is enjoying a little "me time" in a white garden. The vase is hand blown clear glass, slightly twisted into a vertical pattern, creating an optical illusion. Antique glass like this is unmistakable upon touch and cannot be reproduced. It is very thin, flawed and delicate, fast becoming difficult to find in decent condition.

Measuring approximately 9 1/4 inches tall by just under 3 inches in diameter, the hand enameled scene on this vase is done with charming detail, unsigned but likely the work of artist Mary Gregory. The blending of pigments on the lady's face and hair is still vibrant and the careful layering of white on white enamel gives the decoration a mystical quality.

There was obviously much time spent building all these details with more than casual brush strokes. Also of interest is how this is a Springtime scene rather than winter, and how the young woman has long, free flowing red tresses, not the more formal Gibson girl hairstyle.

Both are uncommon choices for Mary Gregory or any other Victorian era artists who worked in this style. There are two small chips under the lower rim ruffles and a stray bit of gold gilt (please see detail photos). None are obvious and the chips appear contained. There is no other gilt anywhere on this vase. The random bubbles throughout the glass serve to validate it's age, therefore are charming and forgivable. The amount of lint my camera picked up for the photos is less forgivable but impressive. I promise the view is much softer with human eyes. I cannot keep all of the treasure I have inherited.
