Antique Victorian 1890s Vaseline & Cranberry OPALESCENT 4-Lily EPERGNE withRigaree
Hard to find, circa 1890s Hand-Blown 4-Lily Trumpet Flower Victorian Opalescent Epergne. Vaseline combined w/Pink Opalescent Glass, cranberry Frit. Applied Crystal Rigaree vines around the stems. A similar piece is pictured in the book "The Standard Encyclopedia of Opalescent Glass" by Edwards & Carwile, noted as the "Serpent Threads" Epergne & they attribute this to European origin but I'm inclined to think it is native to my area of Pittsburgh as so many glassmakers were operating here at the latter part of the 19th century. The Vaseline portions of this piece glows under black light (see photo), the photos are un-edited so that you can observe the extraordinary color of this magnificent work of art glass. Stands approx 21 1/2" at the center horn, basin measures approx 9 3/4" diameter, depth is 2 3/8. There are brass findings at the tips of the horns & the center horn screws into a brass medallion in center of basin. This piece has NO chips or nicks which is miraculous considering it's delicate nature. You'll likely see some dirt residue in the bottoms of the horns (but it's victorian dirt so hopefully you'll be good with that). I have had this piece in my personal collection for several decades & it's time to let it go.
