ANTIQUE THOMAS WEBB OPAL INTAGLIO CUT CRANBERRY VASE Signed William Fritsche
Late 19th Century Thomas Webb & Sons vase of globe and shaft form, cased in polished opal over cranberry intaglio flash cut by William Fritsche, the shouldered ovoid base with deep scrolling band of stylised flowers and foliage between repeat pattern borders, the rising slender neck with deep cut stars and ovals to a criss-cross grid. Engraved signature to the base.
William Fritsche arrived in England from Meisterdorf in Bohemia around 1870 and is claimed to be the finest copper wheel engraver ever to have worked in this country. Working for Thomas Webb, he executed traditional style engraving and helped to develop a new style called Rock Crystal. It is rare to find this combination within his works, the more usual although still rare being clear or rock crystal glass bearing his signature. The polish and cut is superb, a very fine high quality piece.
