ANTIQUE FRENCH VICTORIAN MOURNING HAIR ART CONVEX GLASS RELIQUARY 1820's
ANTIQUE FRENCH VICTORIAN MOURNING HAIR ART CONVEX GLASS RELIQUARY - 1820's. An antique French sentimental hair artwork mourning memento. It's dated of 1820's. The whole is painted like old miniatures painting and embellished with glued hair.Set under a domed convex glass and with brass surround. In overall good antique condition with some wear. This one is truly extraordinary.
I have never seen a memory like this before. It represents a couple in wedding clothes, around a stelle on which are engraved the following inscriptions. On september 29, 1820, Désirée, Hippolythe, were united for life. The set is painted and decorated with glued hair. The most extraordinary is the history that we find on the back of the small box that protects everything!!Here is what is written. Insects having attacked this hair, I had to dismantle this frame and repair it on December 19, 1915, Sunday. This hair is that of my great-grandmother Désirée Marie, first wife of Hippolythe Mirande, mother of my grandmother Gabrielle Ferrien, née Mirande. It is signed Marcel Mirande. It is really wonderful to find this testimony of the life of this little reliquary. The support has been glued in two places (see pictures). Diameter (9 cm) 3.54. We are very pleased to help.
