ANTIQUE FRENCH VICTORIAN MOURNING HAIR ART CONVEX GLASS FRAME RELIQUARY 1874. An antique French Napoleon III era sentimental hair artwork mourning memento.
It is unusual and crafted from hair as a lasting memento of a lost loved one. Set under a domed convex glass and housed within an ebonized wooden frame with brass surround. In overall good antique condition with some wear to the wooden frame. This very beautiful piece was created with brown hair, strands of hair to create a feather with a flower in the center and the initials J G. This has never been opened and still has an inscription on the back written in ink saying: Mademoiselle Caroline Geoffroy's hair surrounds the thoughts of her father.
This item was have been a keepsake intended to exist throughout a lifetime, much the same as a photograph today would be.
