Rare C. F. Monroe Wavecrest Cigar Jar HP Opalware Gold Plated Locking Collar
This lovely opalware jar was made by the C. Monroe Glass Company of Meriden, Connecticut.
The embossed gold plated band was made by the Pairpoint Company. The band has a keyhole and will lock.
However, I do not have the key. The Monroe Company hired only the finest artist of the day to hand paint the beautiful designs on their glass. Several lines of opalware as well as lead crystal was designed and decorated by the company. The company was established about 1886 and produced some of the finest glass until about 1916. The Wavecrest line was the first line made and the earliest Wavecrest, when marked, bore the red banner mark. Many different items were produced including dresser boxes, vases, bon bon jars, whisk broom holders, cream and sugar sets, plaques, and many others. I have collected the glass of C. During these years, only a limited number of cigar jars have I encountered. This lovely, pale butter yellow jar has a gold plated embossed locking band and it does bear the red banner mark. It stands 6 1/2 tall and has a swirl design top. There is a floral design on the top and on both sides and the word "Cigars" is written in Purple slip across the front. This is a lovely piece of fine art glass.
